Maria was one of the "lucky" kids who arrived in Austin before midnight. Considering all the challenges they faced just getting to Austin, these kids were in good spirits. The picture we had of her must be a couple of years old because Maria looks very different now. After we welcomed all of the kids and it was time to leave the airport, Maria made sure to hug all of her friends good-bye (for a week). It is a lot for a 9 1/2 year old to handle, but she remained calm and polite. And patient. Due to some lost luggage, we ended up leaving the airport about an hour after others who arrived with Maria. She was glad to see a bed and slept very well on her first night in Austin.
